Explaining Aged Care Assessment Process to an elderly client

Navigating the aged care system can be complex, particularly for someone unfamiliar with the government funding process, including the one involved with my aged care.

The first step is to have a phone discussion with the Aged care assessment team and request the aged care assessment.

My Aged Care assessment is an essential and compulsory step, as it helps evaluate the care and services required for you or your loved one.

To help you understand this critical process, we have gathered answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about My Aged Care assessments.

What is a My Aged Care Assessment?

A qualified My Aged Care Assessment team professional conducts a My Aged Care assessment. During this assessment, they will try to understand the care needs of elderly individuals in more detail by meeting you face-to-face at your home.

The outcomes of this assessment can identify the services an elderly person will require to get help and support in living independently at home.

This assessment can further determine if any other government-funded aged care service type is more suitable. For example, a person who needs more support and cannot live independently at home will be directed to receive higher funding for aged care residential care. A person needing less support can receive the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).

Who Needs a My Aged Care Assessment?

You can request a My Aged Care assessment if you are over 65 years of age and require assistance with daily living tasks at home. These tasks could include your personal care, mobility, or household chores.

My aged care funding is aimed primarily at older Australians, typically those over 65 or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 50.

If you care for someone over 65, you can also ring the My Aged Care assessment team and initiate an assessment to seek formal support if the person you care for does not receive the My Aged Care package.

You can also request a re-assessment if you or your loved one already received my aged care package but needs more care due to a recent change in situation.

How Do I Apply for a My Aged Care Assessment?

Applying for a My Aged Care assessment is straightforward. You can either complete an online eligibility check form and then contact My Aged Care on their helpline number listed on the website.

A representative will collect information about your situation and health needs and then refer you for an assessment.

Your Medicare card and some basic medical information are essential during the application process.

What Types of Assessments Are Available?

There are two primary types of My Aged Care assessments:

  1. Regional Assessment Service (RAS):

This is for individuals needing very basic support through the CHSP. It focuses on essential assistance with cleaning, gardening, or meal preparation. CHSP is not an individual package funding, but you will be referred to a local organisation that may have been receiving block funding to provide these essential services. You may have to contact these local organisations to find out if they can support you straightaway, or you can opt to go on their waitlist.

  2. Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT):

This more comprehensive assessment is required for those needing higher care levels, such as Home Care Packages or residential aged care. ACAT assessments consider more complex medical and personal needs.

What Happens During a My Aged Care Assessment?

During the assessment, an assessor will visit your home to discuss various aspects of your health, mobility, and daily activities. Expect questions about your ability to bathe, dress, cook, or take medications. The assessment usually takes 60 to 90 minutes and aims to understand your needs and facilitate appropriate support.

How long does It take to get an Assessment?

The time it takes to arrange a My Aged Care assessment can vary depending on availability in your area. Generally, assessments are scheduled within a few weeks. However, assessments can often be expedited in urgent cases such as significant health concerns.

How Do I Prepare for a My Aged Care Assessment?

Preparation is crucial for a successful assessment. Having relevant information ready, such as your medical history, current medications, and any ongoing treatments, is beneficial. Consider which tasks you find challenging and where you need the most assistance. Additionally, having a family member or caregiver present during the assessment can provide valuable insights.

What Services Can I Access After a My Aged Care Assessment?

The services available depend on the outcome of the assessment. Typical services that may be suggested include:

  • Personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming)

  • Domestic assistance (cleaning, laundry)

  • Meal preparation and delivery

  • Transportation to appointments

  • Social support and companionship

  • Allied health services (physiotherapy, occupational therapy)

Home Care Packages may include additional services for those with more complex needs, such as nursing care, in-home respite, and home modifications.

Do I Need to Pay for My Aged Care Services?

The Australian Government provides subsidies for most aged care services, though certain costs may be applicable based on your financial circumstances. The fee structure will be outlined during the assessment process.

For CHSP services, a minor contribution is usually necessary, whereas Home Care Packages have a more comprehensive fee structure determined by income. Assessors will clarify all possible costs and your options.

What Happens After the My Aged Care Assessment?

After your assessment, you will receive a letter outlining the services for which you qualify. You will be added to a national waiting list if evaluated for a Home Care Package.

For more urgent but basic requirements, you may be suggested to use CHSP services initially, and the assessor might assist in organising services with local providers. Furthermore, you will receive a support plan detailing the services you will receive.
